Hasil penelitian UNICEF di Indonesia menjelaskan fakta mengerikan bahwa sekitar 88 persen kematian pada anak akibat penyakit diare yang disebabkan oleh sanitasi serta perilaku kebersihan masyarakat yang sangat buruk. Gara-gara perilaku boker sembarangan itu juga negara sampai mengalami kerugian sebesar 56,7 triliun pertahunnya.
“Masyarakat perlu sadar akan perilaku hidup sehat. Saya sedih, sudah 73 tahun kita merdeka masih ada yang BAB sembarangan, imbuh Nila Moeloek Menteri Kesehatan RI, saat dijumpai di Gedung Kementerian Kesehatan.
Menurut keterangan beliau, Kementerian Kesehatan sebenarnya sudah lama melakukan kerjasama dengan kementerian lainnya untuk melakukan pendekatan Sanitasi Total Berbasis Masyarakat (STBM) untuk mengubah perilaku higienis yang buruk di masyarakat. Terdapat lima pilar STBM yaitu stop buang air sembarangan, cuci tangan pakai sabun, pengelolaan air minum dan makanan, pengelolaan sampah, dan pengelolaan limbah cair.
“Harus diingat bahwa masyarakat yang sehat merupakan masyarakat berkualitas. Di dunia kita menyepakati bahwa sanitasi merupakan program pembangunan berkelanjutan. Khusus untuk daerah pedalaman, Menkes berkata kan terus mengupayakan pembangunan sanitasi yang diambil dari dana desa.
“Kami terus melakukan kerjasama jangka panjang khususnya dengan kepala daerah di mana daerah pedalaman desa wajib untuk mengalokasikan anggaran sebagai sumber pembuatan sanitasi.
