Most beginner bloggers fuss over the themes and design of their blog. They create categories and add pages. However, they often overlook security. It strikes them only after their site has been stripped of all its content owing to a hacker's attack.
The simple reason why nobody pays attention to security issues is because they take for granted that their site won't be attacked. Worse is when they believe that there are security measures already in place although they have never bothered to confirm it. No WordPress site is full proof.
It has been noted that the plug-ins are one of the major loopholes on the WordPress platform. Plug-ins enhance website functionality by allowing for greater customization but they also increase security risks. Many-a-times with plug-ins, they are not coded well, are outdated or are no-longer supported by the developers. These are all flaws that hackers exploit. The same goes for themes. The other factors that make your site vulnerable to hacking are default and weak passwords, obsolete softwares and not taking backups.
What's bad about a hack is that it can go unnoticed for days, weeks and months and when you realize it, the damage has already been done. Hackers rarely leave behind telltale signs of their ugly deeds. Yet there are a few signs that can help you tell when someone's messing with your site. They include the following.
• There might be changes to the visual appearance of your site called website defacement. This happens when the interceptor replaces your site with his own on the host's server.
• They might delete certain sections of your website resulting in a web crash or the "404 page Not Found Error".
• They might add numerous, unpleasant pop-ups. If you click on these pop-ups, you end up downloading more malicious content.
• A blank white page called the White Screen of Death also shows up.
• When users try to access your site, they are directed to a new URL as hackers alter the "htaccess" file.
• If your site has been hacked, your host might block you so as to protect the server from damage.
It is hard and time-consuming to restore your site to its former position. If the damage is extensive, it might be impossible because they not only damage your website but also dent your reputation and brand. Hence, you should monitor your site regularly to take note of suspicious activity. Here's what you should do.
• Scan your site frequently to catch malware and irregular redirects. There are several independent plug-ins you can use to keep a tab on your site. Premium versions allow you to a schedule scan so that even if you forget your site is being continuously scanned.
• In order to insert malware, hackers modify existing files. They also upload malicious scripts. They use these files and scripts to manipulate your system from a remote location. The same scanning systems allow you to track changes to files.
• You should monitor user activity for any new admin users. You should also monitor site traffic as an unexpected surge in traffic from a particular location might suggest suspicious activity.
• You should conduct a detailed enquiry about plug-in or theme before you install it and also update it regularly.
